As one of 13 children, McClain began singing at his church at the age of five before taking up work as a cotton picker. After an argument with his stepfather at the age of 13, he ran away from home and joined the band Little Melvin Underwood (where he eventually became lead vocalist). Despite the fact that he had fallen into a fight with his stepfather at the age of 13. that McClain subsequently performed three times at the Apollo Theatre did not take off. He was in free swimming, changed many jobs and in the 70-80s even performed on the streets of Penascola, Florida. McClain was lucky enough to participate in the recording of Hubert Sumlin's album "Blues Party" for Black Top Records in 1987, which brought together many Boston musicians. This collaboration led him to AudioQuest Records in 1993, where a great new album, Give It Up To Love, was released, which also included two original cover versions of Al Green and Carlene Carter. This new recording received rave reviews in the soul and R&B music press, and the subsequent "Keep On Movin'" two years later allowed Sam McClain to finally start enjoying the fruits of his labor and talent.
