康塔塔（Cantata），意大利文，原意是歌唱，在17世纪初，康塔塔是一种单声部的戏剧性牧歌，用鲁特琴与通奏低音伴奏。17世纪后期，发展为分几个声部演唱，有些由宣叙调组成，有些则是一连串的咏叹调。当时分为室内演唱的世俗康塔塔与教会演唱的宗教康塔塔两种，18世纪成为更适合于剧场演出的音乐，其结构通常由一段利都奈罗(Ritornello)、一段具两个对比主题的咏叹调和结尾呼应的利都奈罗组成。利都奈罗是意大利文，意为小的反复，指器乐引子的反复和整个乐队返回演奏的部分。18世纪的康塔塔主要用于教堂，用一个或几个独唱者、合唱、管风琴和乐队，歌词采用圣经经文。在巴赫以前，泰勒曼、许茨、亨德尔都对这种形式的发展起过作用，巴赫在此基础上发展而形成了典范。

巴赫的康塔塔大部分是宗教性的，这些宗教康塔塔建立在路德赞美诗的传统之上，马丁·路德（1483—1564）的宗教改革，规定教友共同参与礼拜仪式。为这目的，他首创在宗教仪式中采用德语而不用拉丁语。路德和他的助手们创作了第一批赞美诗，巴赫在路德赞美诗基础上，使康塔塔这种形式得以更加完美。当时的德国康塔塔吸收了歌剧中的宣叙调、咏叹调、二重唱的风格；吸收了法国歌剧序曲与意大利器乐表现的色彩感，变成一种完美的艺术整体。宗教性的康塔塔在宗教仪式中和布道及布道后的祈祷一样，与当天宣讲的福音书有关。宗教年度的每一个星期天都需要一部康塔塔，加上假日和特殊场合所需的作品，每年大约需要60部康塔塔。巴赫大约创作了总数4—5套的康塔塔，总计在300首左右，除散佚的以外，现在留下来的大约有200多首宗教康塔塔。除宗教康塔塔外，还有一些世俗康塔塔。

巴赫的康塔塔作品，一般爱乐者可选择有特色的单片收藏，从单片收藏的角度可选择：
1.卡尔·李希特版。DG，Archiv公司出了卡尔·李希特3张单片，CD编号427 115－2收有第五十一号、第九十三号、第一百二十九号；CD编号427 128－2收有第四号、第五十六号、第八十二号；CD编号427 130—2收有第二十六号、第八十号、第一百一十六号。这3张可谓是精选，卡尔·李希特另有一套4张的专辑，CD编号413 613－2，巴赫较著名的康塔塔除第一百四十号外都收了进去。第一百四十号则可选DG画廊版，CD编号419 466－2（与《圣母颂》同为一张）。
2.哈农库特、莱昂哈特版，哈农库特、莱昂哈特在Teldec录制的全集，Teldec精选出4张成为一个小套，CD编号4509 92627－2，共收有第四号、第十二号、第五十一号、第五十四号、第五十六号、第六十七号、第八十号、第八十二号、第一百二十一号、第一百四十号、第一百四十三号、第一百四十六号、第一百七十号，《企鹅》评介三星。
3.马里纳(Marriner）版，马里纳指挥圣马丁乐团在Decca公司录制的第八十二号、第一百五十九号、第一百七十号，CD编号430 260－2，《企鹅》评为三星带花。
4.加德纳(Gardiner)版，加德纳在DG，Archiv、Philips和Erato公司都录了巴赫的康塔塔，其中指挥蒙特威尔第合唱团、英国巴洛克乐团在DG，Archiv录了4张；CD编号437 327－2，收有第三十六、六十一、六十二号；CD编号429 782－2，收有第一百零六、一百一十八、一百九十八号；CD编号431 809－2收有第一百四十、一百四十七号；CD编号439 885－2收有第三十六、六十二，一百零六、一百一十八b、一百四十七号，另有《马太受难曲》、《约翰受难曲》、《圣诞清唱剧》等的选曲。这4张CD中，《企鹅》评429 782－2和431 809－2为三星。加德纳指挥蒙特威尔第合唱团、英国巴洛克乐团在Erato录的第四、第一百三十一号（CD编号2292 45988－2），《企鹅》评介三星保留一星；第五十、一百一十八号（CD编号2292 45979－2），《企鹅》评介三星。在Philips录的第五十一号十《圣母颂》，CD编号411458－2，《企鹅》评介三星。

3.里夫金(Rifkin)指挥巴赫艺术团演唱的第一百零六、一百三十一号，Decca公司，CD编号O－L417 323－2，《企鹅》评介三星。里夫金指挥巴赫艺术团演唱的第八十、一百四十七号，CD编号O－L417 250－2；第五十一、七十八、一百四十号，CD编号443 188－2，CD编号O－L443 188－2，《留声机》杂志都给予高度评介。
