Many discs offer the three Brahms Violin Sonatas as an ideal coupling, but few are as satisfying as this Sony issue, with the prize-winning British virtuoso, Jack Liebeck, joined in a remarkable partnership with the Russian pianist, Katya Apekisheva. Where other virtuoso violinists sometimes tend to regard their pianist merely as an accompanist, this young duo work as equals, each responding to the other in performances that consistently sound spontaneous.
They also bring out the subtle contrasts between the three works. In No. 1 the lyrical warmth of the first movement is set against the deeply meditative quality of the slow movement, leading on to the finale, which is played with almost Mendelssohnian lightness. The compact structure of No.2 suits them equally well, with the first movement bringing the subtlest contrasts of tone from Liebeck, down to a hushed pianissimo. The brief, wistfully lyrical slow movement leads to a warm, strong account of the finale with its main ‘travelling’ theme. The dramatic strength of No. 3 with its minor-key intensity brings another contrast, with Liebeck again finding the widest tonal range in lightness and agility set against power. The dedicated account of the slow movement leads to big, dramatic contrasts in the finale. It is remarkable that each of the players brings such expressive depth to their performances, with echo sequences never played mechanically. Excellent, well-balanced sound.
