Description: Shakespeare is Verdi's companion of creative life. "Macbeth" is his first attempt to create an opera on a Shakespearean theme. This work testified to important changes in the composer's work, to searches in the field of musical drama. Shakespeare's tragedy presented Verdi with new challenges. It was impossible to embody the images of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth with the usual operatic techniques. The basis of the vocal parts of the heroes, primarily Lady Macbeth, was an expressive recitation. Verdi defined his requirements for the transfer of the party as follows: "... I would like to see Lady Macbeth ugly and evil... I would like the lady not to sing at all, for the lady's voice to be sharp, muffled, gloomy... that there might be something diabolical about Lady Macbeth's voice." Verdi pointed out to the performer of the male part: "You understand in the most excellent way that Macbeth should not die like Edgar and Gennaro (characters in Donizetti's operas), etc., therefore, it is necessary to perform the death scene in a new manner. Let death be pathetic... let it be terrifying. The entire scene must be held in a low voice, except for the last two verses." Of course, the words that Lady Macbeth should not sing should not be taken literally. But her part is sharply different from all the female parts of the Italian repertoire, requiring expressive and truthful recitation from the artist of high art. In the opera, some motifs of the tragedy were eliminated, the image of Macbeth lost its psychological truth and depth, but the figure of Lady Macbeth can be put on a par with Shakespeare's. An orchestra is used in a new way, forming a solid base of action. Later, Verdi created a new edition for Paris (1865). The Paris version of the opera became longer and nobler than the original Florentine version of 1847, in seventeen years Verdi's musical language was significantly enriched. In the last act, he re-wrote the chorus of Scottish exiles and the scene of the battle. In the finale, Verdi replaced the death scene of Macbeth with a life-affirming chorus of bards. Along with the added excellent episodes, Verdi wrote an inserted ballet at the request of the theater. «... Maybe I can give up that I didn't do Macbeth well, but that I don't know, don't understand, and don't feel Shakespeare, no, for God's sake, no. This is my favorite poet, whom I have been holding in my hands since early childhood and whom I read and re-read constantly..."
