The presence of vision in the finely directed DVD serves to underline an implicit ambiguity in the opera – whether Madiel and the spirits conjured up in Act II are real or are just Renata’s paranoid delusions. Here the use of mimed figures, unseen by the protagonists but perceived by the audience, was a brilliant solution. The frenetic, highly charged atmosphere of the final Convent scene benefits by vision particularly in this splendid production. The sound has marvellous presence and detail.

Bertini’s account was recorded at the Opéra Bastille in March 2000 and was the opera’s first (and much heralded) staging in France. It has plenty in its favour, including a good cast, with an excellent Natasha in Olga Guryakova. There is a fine Bolkonsky in Nathan Gunn and an ideal Pierre Bezhukov (Robert Brubaker), who both looks and sounds exactly right. Perhaps Anatoli Kotcherga is not quite as memorable a Kutuzov as Nikolai Okhotnikov on the Kirov set, but he is commanding nevertheless. Gary Bertini conducts his fine chorus and orchestra well and, generally speaking, there are few serious weaknesses. In addition to the 210 minutes of the opera itself, the Paris recording includes two features on the production, running to 79 minutes or so. No one investing in the set is likely to be greatly disappointed, for the viewer is held from start to finish.
Recorded live at the 1999 Spoleto Festival in full and open Chandos sound, Richard Hickox’s formidable version of Prokofiev’s epic opera offers a strong, thrustful performance with a cast more consistent than those on rival sets. With a warm understanding of the idiom, helped by a substantial Russian element among the singers, not least the chorus, Hickox keeps the 13 scenes moving well at speeds often on the fast side. Pointing the dramatic contrast between personal tragedy and great public events, the surging lyricism of Prokofiev’s inspiration is sharply set against bitingly rhythmic writing, whether in the party scenes of the first part or the wartime scenes of the second half. The glorious tunefulness of the patriotic numbers has just the gulp-in-the-throat quality needed, whether it’s General Kutuzov’s big aria, nobly sung by Alan Ewing, or the big choruses fervently sung by the Russian choir.
Ekaterina Morozova is a moving Natasha, Slavonic in timbre, weighty but still girlish enough, with an edge to the voice that rarely turns squally. She is well matched in the beautiful opening scene by Pamela Helen Stephen as her cousin, Sonya, while Roderick Williams is a fresh, virile Andrei, and Justin Lavender a vulnerable-sounding Pierre, who convincingly erupts in anger. Alan Opie is a characterful Napoleon, with the battle scene of Borodino thrillingly vivid, not least in shattering cannon shots. Other versions may have starrier individual contributions, but this one has no weak link, and the recording is not just full and brilliant but, beautifully balanced, captures the sweetness of the Spoleto strings very persuasively. The four-disc layout (for the price of three) means breaks come at the ends of scenes.
