Description:
The action takes place in the suburban vicinity of Naples and in the house of Don Geronio.The poet Prosdocimo, writing a new play, is looking for inspiration in the camp of gypsies. There he meets a rich man Geronio and a young gypsy Zayda, who was once associated with a Turkish prince and still loves him. Guessing at Geronio's hand, she reveals to him that his wife is cheating on him. When the rich man returns home, he actually finds his wife Fiorilla there with Selim, who tears him off that he is the same Turkish prince whom Zayda loves so much. Satisfied with the plot found for his drama, Prosdochimo plans to confuse him even more and negotiates with a young gypsy: it is she who will wait for Selim on a date instead of Fiorilla. But during the meeting, the last one suddenly appears. Next, Geronio appears, and a squabble ensues. Finally, the Turkish prince during the costume ball escapes with his unfaithful wife Geronio. But the omnipresent poet warns the deceived husband and Zaida, who appear at the festival, disguised as Fiorilla and the Turk. After a whole firework of misunderstandings on the shore, Zaida and Fiorilla, Selim and Narciso, an admirer of Fiorella, whom the gypsy exchanged for her favorite prince, meet. The old love between her and the Turk is revived, and Geranio's wife returns to her husband. I am very pleased: he managed to complete his play.

The work was given its first performance in Rome in 1812. It is still unclear whether Rossini was 14 or 18 when he wrote it; what is beyond doubt, however, is the anticipation of great things to come. The libretto is a far-fetched tale of feuding kings, mistaken identities, disguises and cruel fates typical of the late 18th-century opera seria. Young stage director Davide Livermore, heading a production of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino, turns the libretto into a ghost story, setting the action behind the stage of an opera house, when everyone has left and all that remains are the spirits of an opera that yearns for the breath of life – much like the practically forgotten “Demetrio e Polibio” itself. With the help of little flames that flare up from the singers‘ palms and other “phantasmagorical“ tricks, Livermore creates an enchanting atmosphere that is given a perfect musical rendering by conductor Corrado Rovaris (Music Director of the Opera Company of Philadelphia) and the Orchestra Sinfonica Rossini. Each giving outstanding performances are the four stand-out soloists Maria José Moreno, Victoria Zaytseva, Yijie Shi and Mirco Palazzi, “stars … of the highest international order“ (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Once again, the Rossini Opera Festival fulfills its dual goal of performing unknown Rossini works in new, critical editions, and of fostering young singers on their path towards the world‘s great stages.

Rossini also used some material from The Barber of Seville in his opera. Part of the recitatives and three arias were written by Luca Agolini. In 1818-1820, when publishing the score, Rossini made amendments (replaced one of Agolini's arias with his own and added another number).
